First Mountain Bike Race of the Season

Mac kicked off his mountain bike racing season today.
The race was at cascade Locks and he rode about 6 miles total. It was a super, wet, super soggy, super muddy and very cold race!
He trekked on thru it all and did a great job!
Go Mac Attack!

Special Birthdays!

It seems the birthday season has hit hard around here lately! I know so many people with birthdays happening all of last month, this month and well- the rest of the summer!
A few weeks ago, we celebrated Elyse's birthday at Edgefield. Always, always a good time with that group!
Happy Birthday Elyse! Your a great friend and super gal!
Last weekend I was able to celebrate Jimbo's birthday! I even got to see a few of my Canby friends.
Good Times!
Happy Birthday Jim!
Thanks for having me along to celebrate!
I had some good laughs and getting to hang with Momma B is always a good thing (0:
To all you others out there with birthdays that just passed and birthdays coming up-
I wish you a Happy Birthday and a Blessed Year!

Lilly is going to Mars!

Ha, bet that story line got your attention! She SO wishes she could go to Mars!
Her class has been studying the solar system, each planet, space, etc. Lilly thoroughly enjoyed this unit! They had an assignment to find a current media event or story and write about it and present it to their class. So, we got on-line and looked through a ton of stories and events...this one caught our eye for sure, so she hopped right on it and wrote up her report, printed of her pictures and could hardly wait to get back to school to show her classmates.
It's called Going to Mars with Maven campaign. You can submit your name and a message to be sent into Mars orbit on the Maven spacecraft. Your message has to be in the form of a haiku poem. Anybody on planet Earth is welcome to participate...you even get an official certificate that shows your name will be flown aboard the spacecraft as it journeys to Mars!
Her classmates all thought it was "super cool" and were ready to log on to the site and join in the fun.
Here is a link with all the info- Send your Name and message to Mars!
It closes soon, so get your name entered before it closes!

Spring Fever...

So this post is all about my Mac Attack.
He just finished track season and this year seemed to have a lot of "social" things happening throughout it!
He was on Cedar Ridge's track team because our little school does not have any sports teams. He was pretty excited about it, I think, for a few different reasons. He knows a lot of the kids at Cedar Ridge because he went to grade school with them for a few years at Sandy Grade and has played sports with them outside of school since we moved here. I am thankful that he keeps in touch with all of these kids even though he doesn't see them everyday. I think being on the CR track team helped him feel like he was really part of a middle school. At OTA, his class is the oldest of kids and the only 6th grade class, so it does NOT feel like a traditional middle school in anyway. We have kept him at OTA because of the smaller class sizes and the IB teaching and curriculum ways/environment have been a great value to his education. I know it's completely lacking in giving him a "middle school" type experience and social life, but in my mind, the education piece is more important right now. Besides, he has never had issues making friends or socializing, so he is doing just fine in this area and he does have a social life on a smaller scale maybe from others that go to a bigger school or middle years school.
Anyhow,
He had a good track season. He tried almost every race and even did long jump. Pat and I encouraged him to try new races/events at each track meet.
He is in the red shirt-
He enjoyed riding the bus to the track meets with his team mates/buddies. This might sound funny to some of you, but our school does not have buses, so he really hasn't had many opportunities to ride on the bus with friends. It was definitely a social highlight (0:
He had a few other social happenings that have been quite a journey for us! The first would be his very "first" girl crush. I didn't really know exactly how much he "liked" her until they had been chatting over texts, at practice and track meets, etc for a few weeks. He has had his cell phone for awhile, but it's never been something that he really spent much time on- at all...well, let me tell ya...you throw a girl into a boy's life and WOW...that's all they want to do is text each other! I guess it's not much different from when I was young and would hide with our house phone and talk to a boy for a whole hour....but, I didn't do it all that much because we only had one phone and my Dad was always in ear-shot! LOL....plus, I think kids now day's say a lot of things they may not really mean or understand or wouldn't normally say simply because they are texting vs having face to face conversations and "voice" conversations. It really is very different from how I grew up as far as communication devices go!!!We have rules/guidelines in place for his phone, but it had really just never been a "big deal" before. He most definitely got caught up in texting past his allowed time and we got a whoppin' dose of how much these kids love face-time!!!! Mac does not have a Facebook account like most of his classmates and friends do, but you can still face-time even if you don't have a Facebook account. We didn't have guidelines/rules for things this specific because he had never been interested in them before. We do have the rule that his laptop is shut off by 9:00 pm every night so he isn't up late playing games, etc. He has a laptop simply because they do almost all of their school work and homework on it. His teacher has a homework blog that he has to check everyday to even do his homework assignments! SO- with all of this comes responsibility and how to properly "handle" cyber world. I think this is one of the main reasons parents should be in the know about how computers, cell phones, I pads, I touches, MP3 players, Kindles, tablets, etc work...because at some point, your child will have access to them!
Anyhow, I have to say that Mac actually handled all of this new social media stuff pretty darn well. He definitely needed a bit if guidance and we talked to him every single evening (much to his dis-liking) about what's proper and what's not proper and to remind him of what our rules are and that he had to follow them.
I read all of his texts (for now) simply because things come up or get said that he doesn't always know how to handle or respond too- and he needs to have us help him figure it out. He knows (and has done a good job) that he should never say anything bad/negative about someone or to someone in a text. He knows that he should never put something in a text or email that he wouldn't be able to say to the person face to face.
I did let him go on a group date with this gal that he liked. He asked for permission and knew that I would know some of the other mom's and kids going. I told him yes because it was a group thing. Pat and I talked to him about what was OK and what wasn't OK in a social situation like this. We also explained to him that if he was going to have crushes or any interests in "girls" that he had to have a major chat with us about what being a gentleman means!! We told him that since he asked her to the movies, he had to use his allowance to buy her ticket. It was funny...he was the only boy that did this out of the whole group that went. I don't know...maybe I am just old-fashioned?? Seemed proper to me...even if it was a group date and very innocent, still seemed proper.
So, back to this girl...he met her at track and they really hit it off. They do not go to the same school, so they really only got to see each other at track. We noticed as the weeks ticked by that she seemed to not have a lot of rules or parental guidance. I am in no way shape or form saying anything bad about her, she just simply doesn't have as much "guidance" as Mac does. This definitely created a little bit of an issue for them. She would get upset that he couldn't text late or meet up with her some where or be on the computer all the time. She seemed more "mature" than Mac as far as some social situations (at this age, that is the norm). She seemed to want more of a true boyfriend/girlfriend type deal. I think Mac realized he had just sort of jumped into this "girl stuff" just a little bit too quickly, it was funny to watch him and see how he reacted. He held her hand at the movies, which sort of shocked us...I didn't think he would cross that bridge...but he did. Yes, I know...it's just hand-holding, but I think it's a big deal! (He is so gonna be mad at me for blogging this)
It didn't take long after that move, she wanted him to have his arm around her at practice or meets. She had also said some things in texts that were just way over the top for him. We chatted about it all and he seemed to feel like he was being pressured a bit, so we just gave him some advice and let him figure most of it out on his own. Of course, I had moments of "I am ending this thing NOW!", but as I thought more about it and chatted with others, I decided it was best to use this whole thing as a teaching/learning experience. After all, he was being open with us, talking with us and keeping us in the loop...so that's a big advantage. I KNOW there are tons of kids out there that have parents that have NO CLUE what they are texting, emailing, face-booking, skyping or insta-gramming!!!!!! They never talk with or check in with their parents, it's crazy! Anyhow, Mac is not in that category, so we used this as a lesson because at some point, like when he's 16, he's not going to tell us everything and he will need to know how to handle situations all on his own!
We also explained to him that just because everyone around him has a "girlfriend" at the moment...doesn't mean he needs one! The "love bug" has been running rampant for all these middle-schoolers!
Man...it must be Spring Fever or something!!!
I love this photo, not because it's a great photo shot...but because of the moment we were in...we were reading thru some things on his phone and talking about silly girls and goofy boys and laughing about it all- a little laughter and sense of humor, go a long, long ways sometimes!!!!
We are conservative in this house/family...some of the ideas and situations that Mac faces each and every day are concerning. They are things that we didn't hear or had to be faced with at such a young age. We try to be somewhat open-minded and acknowledge that times are different. The challenge seems to be-
to be open-minded to certain things without changing our beliefs and values. We are not willing to compromise on them. We try everyday to be a positive example to our kids of what our beliefs and values are and we hope it shows them that you have to have courage to follow thru on them, to embrace them and to LIVE them.
Mac and his first gal crush did "break-up"- I knew it would happen shortly after track was over simply becasue they wouldn't see each other much, if at all. We do keep him very busy (0:
Mac learned a lot from it and they broke-up over the phone, voice to voice, not in a text...like so many people do now. They were both respectful towards each other about it- He knew she was going to break up with him, so he told her she had to call him and speak to him. I am proud of him...proud of how he handled all of it. Way to go Mac Attack. Your awesome and we love you (0:
Remember this: A slow dance with the wrong partner can be a tad awkward. A slow dance with the right partner is one of life's sweetest pleasures-
PS: I know I am an over-bearing Momma, but it's for your own good...and also...I can't have a kid dating and a kid in diapers...it's just not gonna work for me!!! Ha-Ha!!!

"Secret" Videos

This is so funny and what happens when your kids get a hold of your phone!
Lilly loves to get Pat's phone and record herself...
I guess she hasn't yet figured out that we can "find" her secret videos...make sure your volume is up-
enjoy and
have a laugh or two-
This girl cracks me up (0:

Blessed Mother's Day Weekend

My Mother's Day weekend was just awesome...every single second of it was a blessed moment.
We started out on Saturday at Grandma Kathy's. We did a work day in her yard to help her and Papa get some yard work and projects done. It was a great family day. We even had a yummy dinner together after all our hard work.
Mac mowed the front and back yard. We have been trying to make sure he goes over and mows about once a week-
Catie Lynn did a great job of sweeping the deck/porch.
Alec raked, weeded and cleaned an area that we put gravel on.
Lilly got a lesson from Grandma on pruning...but Lilly, as usual, had decided she needed to look "fashionable" while we were working and had wore flip-flops! I was worried she was going to cut-off a toe or two, so Grandma did the pruning and Lilly did the raking!!

 Griff was a weeding machine-
 As was Tarver-
Uncle Tim pruned trees and bushes-
Sherry had the "fun" job of pruning the prickly (Ouch) holly bush that is next to the house and was blocking our path to the back yard.
Pat and I took turns getting the gravel to the back yard so Kelly and others could get it spread out.
Yep, it was a great day and the perfect Mom's Day gift for Grandma Kathy. Kudos to Kelly for getting it all coordinated and for getting the gravel, etc!
Dave was our hamburger and hot dog maker for the evening.
Grandma Pam even made up. She made it in time to hang out and visit with everyone and eat with us as well.
The kids came out all dolled up in some of Sherry's old prom dresses...Grandma Kathy has been doing some major spring cleaning and had some of this stuff out and the kids found it all!
Too funny- blogger won't rotate these pics for some reason-
Lilly brought this dress home and has wore it around just about every day.
Mac and Alec....wow...you pull this look off well!
The kids were excited to give out the Mother's Day gifts they had worked on-
these are bird feeders made out of pine-cones that we collected in LaPine. We melted peanut butter and dipped the pine-cones in it- then we rolled them in birdseed. The birds love them...
We also made sun-catchers. It was a project that we did with our Girl Scout troop and they turned out so great that Lilly and I wanted to make more of them.
All three of the kids had fun making these. They are awesome. I couldn't wait to hang mine up!
By the time we were done at Grandma Kathy's we were all a bit tuckered out and needed to head home because we had a big day planned for Sunday!
We got up early on Sunday and went to the Portland Zoo!
SUCH A FUN DAY!
(again, blogger will not rotate some of my pics)
This was one of our first family outings in a very long while with Griff. It just use to be impossible to take him to big places where there are lots of people, movements, sounds, etc....
HE DID AWESOME and the best part- he enjoyed it and had such a good time, as did Mac and Lilly and my mom. So funny- she was as excited about the zoo as the kids were!
For me- this was the best Mother's Day gift I could ever ask for...to see how much Griff has progressed and for us to all be able to go out and enjoy our time together.
It was a very great day.
My camera died after a bit, so these are from the phone- wish they had turned out better!
I am one lucky momma-
truly blessed and truly thankful.
Thanks for reading and I hope you all had a Happy Mother's Day.

Looks like Spring and Feels like Summer!!!

Oh my...our weather has just been amazing! No wet spring for us! I have enjoyed every single second of the sunshine and heat! No complaints from me!
I have enjoyed working in the yard, getting things cleaned up and having all my bulbs and flowers and trees start to bloom.
I have a few new yard signs...thought some of you might like them-
Ha...this one is my favorite by far!
I decided to give my little garden another go...if you don't know what happened to my garden last year, click here You will get a good laugh...I promise (0:
Anyhow, I decided to only buy 6 plants and see if Griff would leave them be. On the very first day I caught Henry (our dog) digging in the beds to make himself a cool place to rest!!! GRRRRRR....he dug up two of the plants in the process. I replanted them and all was well...for five more days...then Griff decided to pull them all out. I replanted them again and only lost one plant...well... he pulled them out again today (day seven) I decided to give up. Once again, we will not have a garden this year.
Oh well- it gives me an excuse to go to the Farmer's Market every weekend!!!
Not having a garden again this summer is a bit of a bummer, but I decided to not let it stop me from getting the first batch of salsa made! I have one batch done and more to go...mmmmmm....yum, yum, yum!
OH MY....after I had spent some time in the yard, this little yellow friend was crawling up my arm. I have never seen a bright yellow spider like this before. Yellow is my favorite color, but I think I can do without this guy crawling on me...a girl has gotta have her limits!!! I think it is just a garden spider...
My morning glory vines are coming along. My Dad helped me plant them from seed starts a few summers back. They never came up the first summer...but now they seem to be taking off. I can't wait for the first round of flowers to bloom. I think of him every time I look at them and smile at the memory of us planting them together...sure do miss him.
Yep...spring is bursting outside...love, love, love it!

Spring sure is exciting! The hope of warmer days, longer daylight, fresh air, new buds, and hours outside.
Yep...I adore spring and can't wait for summer.
Thanks for reading-
Happy weekend everyone!

Sensory Playing and Learning

We have been playing and learning around here like crazy...it's all pretty fun, it takes some work and creativity on my end, but it's all well worth it!
Griff is doing great. He is learning all sorts of new things and making good progress. He isn't "talking" a lot, but he is communicating in many different ways...which helps all of us out and definitely has made him a happy guy!!!
I wanted to share some of the stuff we do that has made a big difference for him. There are so many great ideas out there and I am looking forward to trying as many of them out as possible. We play a lot with painting, play-doh, shaving cream, bubbles and water. Griff is a "sensory seeker"...he needs to be moving and going most of the day. His central nervous system is similar to an infants instead of a toddler's, so he is just constantly on the go, and is just now learning how to slow himself down a little...it's a struggle for him, but he's catching on! If you are "new" to my blog and want to read more about Griff's issues, click here (0:

Bubble blowing is definitely a lot of fun! It helps him with motor planning and fine motor skills. He is learning how to "organize" and use all the muscles in his mouth and also having to practice his fine motor skills. You can tell in this picture that he is having to focus hard on holding the tubing and getting it to his mouth to make the bubbles....all while playing!!
This whistle is a bubble blower and it helps him with coordinating his lips and mouth. Kids with Apraxia have difficulty getting their lips and mouth and tongue to all work together. It takes practice and time and patience for it to all come together.
We have a new addition to our playroom...most of you know that we have hammocks hanging up in there and the kids have always loved hanging and swinging on them! I took them down (for now) and we now have a trapeze bar!!! Ha...who'd a thought??
It's a big hit and great therapy for Griff...
...as well as all the other kiddos around here!

This is a lot of fun too...these are socks (in fact, they were my Dad's socks...miss him terribly) filled with pinto beans of all things!! They are HEAVY...Griff loves to pull, push and carry heavy things. It helps him organize and strengthen his core. The stronger his core becomes, the more progress he will make all around, even with speech. We have relays in the yard to see who can carry them the fastest from one end to the other end. He also puts them in his shopping cart and pushes it every where. He even puts them in his backpack and wears it around for a good part of the day. I am AMAZED at how much this has helped him. I can take him in the stores now and he he behaves very well!!!!
Lilly seems to enjoy it as well...both of them are going to have some major muscles from hauling these socks around!
I also have Rubbermaid bins/totes filled with rice and beans. They are the big bins, so Griff can sit in them if he wants too. The rice and beans feel kind of cool on your feet, legs and hands. Again, helps with sensory stuff. Sometimes he just plays in them with his cars or I hide little toys in it and he digs them out with a little shovel. On a "rough" day...he just throws the rice everywhere and makes a big mess! LOL...it's still a fun play idea.
These are Griff's communication boards-
The first one is his daily schedule. He gets up every morning and checks it to see what his day has in store for him. I am amazed at how much this has helped him. If he can't say the word, he can usually find a picture card to show me what he is trying to say.
This next boards are is his communication boards... helps us with daily communication needs-

This one is my "on the go" board for him...has come in very handy!
As I said earlier, Griff has made some awesome progress! The only place he hasn't improved in is eating...ugh...such a battle. We are trying different things/tactics and I know we will get there in time. This place mat has helped some. It gets him to at-least touch his food, even if he doesn't eat it! It also gives him the option to taste something and put it in the "yucky" spot if he doesn't like it...or "yummy" if he does like it. I just want him to eat...it's definitely a work in progress-
This is our Time Timer...why I never knew about or had one of these before, is just dumb! It is awesome!!!! It would have worked for all of my kids! Whatever the task is- craft time, reading time, play time, eating time or a time out (LOL) Griff can SEE how much time is on the timer and watch it to see how much time is left before we move on to our next task. It even beeps when time is up...very cool gadget to have for little one's!
I am learning a lot from this experience with Griff and he is too...I think we have a long road ahead of us, but he is so sweet and so playful and so full of life...I wouldn't have it any other way.
I have found some really, really useful books for kids that are "high energy" or difficult or inattentive or are autistic or have ADHD or any type of central nervous system issues or sensory issues...in fact, these books have great info for any parent or caregiver that has kids!!!
Here they are-
The Out-of-Sync Child by Carol Stock Kranowitz
The Out-of-Sync Child has Fun by Carol Stock Kranowitz
Growing an In-Sync Child (same author)
They are a great read with TONS of great info. I have even found some things to try that should help Lilly with her CAPD difficulties.
Anyhow, just wanted to share everything with you all and let you know that Griff is making lots of progress.
Thanks for reading and God Bless!
